Resume
About Me
I'm a web and app developer. I've been making websites almost as long as there's been a place to put them. I've focussed on front-end development for the last 10 years, but I've maintained my back-end skills and have managed the full stack for many projects. I the past few years I've been working more on mobile apps, and have been enjoying the challenges that come with that.
I have extensive experience creating business tools for large organizations. I've built content management systems, call centre tools, performance management systems, and learning management systems.
I'm the father of a pretty amazing kid, and live with him and my wife in Vancouver, BC. I love to ride my bike, and I run a big cycling club in the city. Aside from websites and apps, I like to build almost anything. I built a home office in my back yard, and I've built decks and fences and carports and porches. Taking regular stuff and turning it into something special is what drives me.

TELUS Health and Payment Solutions 2019-2024
Senior Developer Analyst
Role: In this position, I was a senior developer, and lead front-end developer on a small team that built web-based HR tools, social media, and reporting applications for TELUS and external customers. We maintained long and short term contracts to offer our suite of products, with customizations, to public and private sector organizations across North America. We offered all services as self-hosted, or cloud based, depending on regulatory requirements for each client. My responsibilities included design and architecture of our full application suite (front and back end), as well as customizing our application for the different needs and branding of each client.
Successes: I updated a standard suite of HR web applications to comply with web standards and strict accessibility guidelines. My changes to the software suite have helped our team to sell these products and services to eight new large clients, including multinational corporations, hospitals, governments, unions, and major retailers, many of whom have signed, and renewed, long term contracts.

TELUS Partner Solutions 2011-2019

UFCW Local 401 2016-2019
Contractor
Role: Was contracted first to build a web based game to spread awareness for grocery workers during their labour dispute. Was then contracted to build a cross-platform (iOS and Android) mobile application for a large conference. The application handled session and activity sign-ups, live polls during presentations, and push notifications for conference events. It also included a social media feed where attendees could post photos and share stories.
Successes: The application was wildly successful in increasing engagement for sessions, allowing attendees to choose sessions without lining up and reducing administration costs for the conference team.
WhatToZee 2016
Contractor
Role: I assisted the WhatToZee development team on an 8 month part-time contract. I did HTML/CSS work as well as JavaScript (Angular) and PHP (Laravel), assisting with a new event management product coming to market.
Successes: Helped consolidate in-line CSS into SASS, significantly reducing page weights.
Vancouver 2010 Olympics 2009-2010
Team Leader
Role: I was proud to be a member of the 2010 Volunteer Team for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I worked as a Team Leader for the duration of the Olympics, and managed volunteer and paid staff at the Pacific Coliseum, venue for speed-skating and figure-skating events. I liaised between security and venue staff, RCMP, athletes, and sport officials to provide smooth day-to-day operations.
Successes: The coliseum was almost a kilometre walk from the bus stations or taxis, and the walk had several steep hills. This presented a major problem for the elderly and people in wheelchairs—a demographic not uncommon at figure skating events. I borrowed five golf carts from the police on site, seconded a group of volunteers to drive people to and from the busses as required, and posted the process for use for the duration of the games. Not only did this provide better accessibility for those who needed assistance, it increased the flow on the walkways for the rest of the guests.
BC Hands & Voices 2009-2015
Board Member
Role: I served as a board member for the BC chapter of Hands & Voices, a charity that works for deaf and hard of hearing young children and their families. I provided technical knowledge to the board as well as my experience with my own child (who is deaf). I wrote articles on assistive technology for people with disabilities for the national newsletter and spoke to parent groups and medical professionals about supporting deaf children.
TELUS 2007-2011
Senior Web Developer
Role: I built an automated order management system for sales agents. This system included order entry forms, order processing queues, leads queues and reporting systems. I was responsible for everything from front end development and user interface design, to server installation and administration.
Successes: Drastically reduced the “end of day” data entry time for sales agents in retail, door-to-door, and kiosk roles. I also integrated sales reporting with actual account data, which eliminated misreporting of sales, giving more accurate commissions for sales agents. The system allowed agents to upload photos of sales contracts, and used OCR to match those contracts to the correct account.
TELUS 2006-2007
Senior Web Developer
Role: I built several online applications that streamlined reporting processes for call centres across the country.
Successes: Helped reduce call answer time by using past statistics to predict call volume, provide call centre managers with suggested staffing levels, and provide feedback on variance to targets.
TELUS Consumer Solutions 2001-2006
Web Developer
Role: I was recruited to manage the intranet for TELUS front-line agents, and turned an antiquated static repository of data into a full-fledged content management system.
Successes: My CMS was launched in 2003, and is the main source of product and procedure information for thousands of TELUS agents. I built authoring tools for a community of 300 authors that allows for updates, image manipulation and document management. This system was used for 15 years, serving millions of pages per week. Using call completion time analysis from a third party, it was estimated that my CMS saved front line agents an average of 30 seconds per call. This translated into a savings of $4 million for its first year in use.
Successes: During a labour dispute in 2005, I was faced with the problem of having untrained management staff answering customer calls for almost five months. In less than a week, I built an order management system that allowed management staff to enter customer order requests into a database, which was queued and prioritized for a smaller group of agents with more experience. The system also placed field orders on a visual map, and helped group orders which required rolling a truck. All action in the system was reported directly to the CEO and senior leaders to keep them updated. The system was so successful, it was retained as a new business practice after the labour dispute, reducing labour and training costs.
BCTel 1999-2001
Call Centre Technology Manager
Role: I built the first intranet for the new BCTel Internet Services (Sympatico) Department. I turned a shared drive full of Microsoft FrontPage files into a full-fledged intranet with a content management system to be used by a call centre of 200 agents for training and product information while we rolled out our new ADSL service.
Successes: Built several learning modules and ran regular information sessions with agents to teach them about the internet so they could speak to customers about the our products.
BCTel 1997-1999
Credit Services Agent
Role: Worked with customers to resolve billing disputes and credit issues. Unfortunately needed to relieve some customers of their services due to non-payment.
Starbucks Coffee 1994-1997
Barista / Assistant Manager
Role: Started as a barista, and was promoted to assistant manager. Helped with hiring, training, and scheduling of staff. Managed inventory and ordering of supplies. Made lots of lattes. Assisted with the opening of multiple new stores and genuinely loved working with the public.
